Substance Use Disorder Patients have challenged me in group therapy settings over the years. I remained calm and knew it wasn't about me at all. My authenticity has always kept them from escalating.

You try to deescalate the situation and find common ground. Sometimes you need to call for a security guard or a police officer. It is OK to specifically ask why the person is upset. Sometimes expectations are impossible at that time and can be addressed in the morning. In the hospital a patient rep and/or administrator or social worker may be needed. It is good to be a patient advocate at all times.
